Leader Devotional & Invitation

Soon after Jesus is born, danger rises. God warns Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt, and later guides the family safely back to Israel, settling in Nazareth. This story shows God's tender care and wise guidance even in scary moments. As you lead, reassure children that God sees, speaks, and leads His people.

Bible Background for Leaders

WHO: Joseph, Mary, Jesus; an angel of the Lord; Herod the king.
WHAT: Angelic warnings lead the family to flee to Egypt and later return under God's direction; Matthew notes fulfilled prophecies.
WHERE: Bethlehem → Egypt → Israel (Nazareth).
WHEN: In the early years of Jesus' life.
WHY: To show God's protective care and faithful guidance over the Messiah and His family.
KEY TRUTH: God is our protector and guide; He leads us in the right time and the right way.

Volunteer Connection Tips

  • Keep the tone calm and hopeful. Avoid graphic details; focus on God's care.
  • Use simple language about safety and trusting God's guidance.
  • Invite kids to share times they felt protected or helped.

Key Vocabulary

  • Protect: God keeps us safe and holds us close.
  • Guide: God shows the way we should go.
  • Obey: To listen to God and do what He says.
Supply Checklist
  • Bible (open during story)
  • Painter's tape to make simple "paths" on the floor
  • Arrow signs labeled "Bethlehem," "Egypt," "Nazareth"
  • Heart poster labeled "God Cares for Us"
  • Paper feet cutouts; crayons/markers; tape

Prep Time: 10–15 minutes to place path tape and location arrows.

Leader Prayer:
"God our Protector, thank You for watching over us. Guide my words and fill our kids with peace and trust today. Amen."

Curiosity

OPENING / CURIOSITY (5 minutes)

Welcome Question (displayed):

"What helps you feel safe?"

Before Kids Arrive:

  • Use tape to make two or three path options on the floor.
  • Place the arrow signs at different ends of the room.
  • Pray for children who may feel worried to sense God's care today.
As Kids Arrive (Leader Script):

"Where do you feel safest—home, church, with family? Today we will hear how God kept Jesus' family safe and guided them."

Curiosity Activity – Safe Path

Purpose: Picture God guiding our steps.

  1. Invite children to walk the tape paths carefully to the signs.
  2. Say: "Sometimes there are many paths, but God shows the way to go."
  3. Gather kids at the "Bethlehem" sign to begin the story.
Transition (Leader Script):

"Let's open God's Word and follow how He guided Joseph and Mary."

Belief

BELIEF (10 minutes)

Prayer of Invitation:
"Lord, speak to us through Your Word and help us trust Your guidance. Amen."

Bible Time Rhyme (with motions)

"Open God's book, let's take a look!
God's Word is true, for me and you!"

Storytelling (Matthew 2:13–23)

  1. An angel warns Joseph in a dream: "Get up, take the child and His mother, and escape to Egypt." Joseph obeys that very night.
  2. The family stays in Egypt until God says it is safe to return.
  3. After Herod dies, an angel says, "Go back to Israel." Joseph obeys, but when he learns of danger, he is warned again and goes to Galilee.
  4. The family settles in Nazareth—just as the prophets said.

Object Moment – Follow the Signs

  1. Point to the "Bethlehem" arrow: "This is where they started."
  2. Walk the children along the tape path to "Egypt": "God protected them."
  3. Lead them to "Nazareth": "God guided them to a safe new home."

Discussion Prompts
