Leader Prep
In the wilderness, John the Baptist calls God's people to repent: to turn around and get their hearts ready for the coming King. Advent is a season of preparation and hope. Repentance is not about fear; it is a joyful turning toward Jesus and the life that pleases God. As you lead, keep your tone warm and invitational: God is drawing children to Himself.
Bible Background for Leaders
WHO: John the Baptist; crowds from Judea and Jerusalem; Pharisees and Sadducees.
WHAT: John preaches repentance and baptizes in the Jordan River; he announces Someone greater who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Volunteer Connection Tips
- Explain repentance in positive language: God helps us turn from what hurts and turn to what heals.
- Keep all examples age-appropriate and hopeful; emphasize God's welcome.
- Invite kids to name simple, practical ways to "make straight paths": kindness, truth-telling, sharing, prayer.

Curiosity
Welcome Question (displayed):
"How do you get ready for a special guest?"
Before Kids Arrive:
- Place tape/arrow cutouts to form a simple path to your story area.
- Lay down the blue cloth as the "Jordan River" near the front.
- Pray quietly for open hearts and clear teaching.
"Welcome! What is something you do to get your home ready for a visitor? Clean up? Make a sign? Let's talk about getting our hearts ready for Jesus!"
Curiosity Activity – Clear the Path
Purpose: Picture what it means to prepare the way.
- Scatter a few soft obstacles (paper crumples/blocks) on the arrow path.
- Invite kids to work together to remove obstacles and make a straight path.
- Say: "John said, 'Prepare the way for the Lord!' Getting ready for Jesus is like clearing a path in our hearts."
"Follow the arrows to our story space—we'll hear what John said about getting ready for the King!"
Belief
Prayer of Invitation (Leader Script):
"Lord, open our hearts to Your Word. Help us listen and follow You. Amen."
Bible Time Rhyme (with motions)
"Open God's book, let's take a look!
God's Word is true, for me and you!"
Storytelling (Matthew 3:1–12)
- John lives in the wilderness and preaches: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!"
- Many come to the Jordan River. John baptizes them as a sign they have turned to God.
- John warns the religious leaders: real repentance shows in a changed life—bear good fruit.
- John announces a greater One is coming—so much greater that John is not worthy to carry His sandals. He will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Visual Object Moment
- Point to the blue "river" cloth: "Baptism shows an outside sign of an inside change."
- Hold up the heart poster: "God cares most about our hearts."
- Invite kids to name fruits of a changed life (kindness, honesty, sharing).
Discussion Prompts
- "What do you think it means to repent or turn to God?"
- "What might 'good fruit' look like in your life this week?"
"Today's truth is: God calls us to prepare our hearts for Jesus. We get ready by turning to Him and doing what He says."
Teach with motions:
- Hands sweeping side to side ("prepare the way")
- Arms straight forward ("make straight paths")
- Point upward ("for the Lord")
Practice:
- Whisper voice
- Normal voice
- Celebration voice
Faith
Make repentance practical and positive: God helps us turn from unkindness to kindness, from hiding to honesty, from selfishness to sharing.
- "What is one kind thing you can do to prepare your heart for Jesus?"
- "How can you say sorry and make it right when you mess up?"
- "Who can you help this week?"
- "What habit could you change this week to follow Jesus more closely?"
- "What does 'bearing good fruit' look like at home or school?"
- "How can you encourage a friend to turn to God with you?"
Interactive Faith Response – Turn & Trust
- Place arrow cutouts on the floor pointing toward the heart poster.
- Give each child a sticky note. Invite them to write/draw one way they want to turn toward Jesus.
- Children walk the arrows and place their notes on the heart, saying quietly: "Jesus, I turn to You."
"Jesus helps us turn toward Him and live with good fruit."
