Leader Devotional & Invitation

Some religious leaders called Sadducees tried to trap Jesus with a tricky question about the resurrection. Jesus pointed them back to Scripture and revealed the truth: God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. His promises continue beyond the grave. His life and love never end.

This story reminds us that God's love outlasts death. When we belong to Him, nothing can separate us from His life. Today, we help children understand that God is always alive and that He brings eternal life to His people.

Reflect:

  • Where have I seen God bring life out of something hard or sad?
  • How can I model quiet hope and confidence in God's forever love?
  • What words can I give children to help them see that God's love never ends?

Leader Prayer:
"God of the living, thank You that Your love lasts forever. Help me share this hope with children today so they know You are alive and Your promises never end. Amen."

Bible Background for Leaders

WHO: Jesus and the Sadducees, who denied resurrection.
WHAT: Jesus teaches that God is the God of the living, not the dead.
WHERE: Jerusalem, during Jesus' final week of ministry.
WHEN: Late in His public teaching, as leaders tried to test Him.
WHY: To reveal God's eternal power and to root hope in His living covenant.
CONNECTION: Links to Exodus 3:6 — "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." God's promises remain alive forever.

Volunteer Connection Tips

  • Keep tone gentle and hopeful: God's life lasts forever.
  • If children mention someone who has died, respond kindly and remind them of God's promise of life with Him.
  • Use language of comfort and confidence in God's forever love.

Key Vocabulary

  • Resurrection: God bringing people to new, forever life.
  • Sadducees: A religious group that did not believe in resurrection.
  • Covenant: God's forever promise to His people.
Supply Checklist
  • Bible (open during story)
  • Memory verse poster (Luke 20:38)
  • Optional name cards: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob
  • Heart or infinity symbol cutouts
  • Craft: paper, crayons, scissors, gold/yellow strips or stickers

Curiosity

OPENING / CURIOSITY (5 minutes)

Welcome Question (displayed):

"What is something you wish would last forever?"

Before Kids Arrive:

  • Write the question on the board or poster.
  • Set out crayons and paper for drawing answers.
  • Pray quietly: "God of the living, help these children feel Your forever love today."
As Kids Arrive (Leader Script):

"Hi, [child's name]! What's something you wish could last forever? Maybe summer break or time with your family?"

At Start Time (Leader Script):

"Today Jesus teaches that God's love and life are forever. God is the God of the living! Let's find out what that means."

Curiosity Activity – Still Alive to God

Purpose: To show that God's promises never end and that to Him, all are alive.

  1. Hold up cards labeled Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  2. Ask: "Are these people gone?" (Kids may say yes.)
  3. Say: "Jesus said God calls Himself their God even now! That means to God, they're alive."
  4. Have children echo: "God is the God of the living!"
Transition (Leader Script):

"Let's hear how Jesus helped people understand that God's love never ends."

Belief

BELIEF (10 minutes)
Leader Instruction

Help children experience this story with calm confidence and joy. Keep the Bible visible, use your voice expressively, and focus on God's forever life.

Prayer of Invitation (Leader Script):

"Jesus, thank You for Your Word. Help us listen carefully and understand that You are the God of the living. Amen."

Bible Time Rhyme:

"Open God's book, let's take a look! God's Word is true, for me and you!"

Storytelling (Luke 20:27–38)

"The Sadducees asked Jesus a tricky question about what happens after people die. They didn't believe in resurrection, so they tried to make it sound silly."

"Jesus said life with God is different after resurrection—people will live forever with Him. God said, 'I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.' Jesus explained that God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, because to Him all are alive!"

"The people were amazed. Jesus showed that God's promises never end and His love lasts forever."

Engagement Tips:

  • Ask: "Why do you think Jesus said God is the God of the living?"
  • Let kids hold up the name cards Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as you tell the story.
  • Emphasize hope: "God's love and life never end!"
Connecting the Wonder Truth:
