Leader Prep

Leader Devotional & Invitation

When Jesus' disciples admired the beauty of the temple, He told them a difficult truth: it would one day fall. That must have been frightening—the temple was their pride and the center of their worship. But Jesus didn't leave them afraid. He told them to stay strong and trust in God even when the world felt shaky.

This story reminds us that our faith is not in buildings or things that can break, but in a God who never fails. When life feels hard or uncertain, God gives us the courage and strength to stand firm.

Leader Prayer:
"God, when the world feels scary or confusing, help me remember You are still in control. Give me peace and courage so I can show these children that we can always trust You. Amen."

Bible Background for Leaders

  • WHO: Jesus and His disciples
  • WHAT: Jesus predicts the destruction of the temple and calls His followers to stand firm in faith.
  • WHERE: Jerusalem, at the temple.
  • WHEN: Near the end of Jesus' ministry, before the crucifixion.
  • WHY: To remind His followers that their faith should be rooted in God, not temporary things.
  • CONNECTION: This connects to James 1:12 and Romans 5:3–5—God gives perseverance and hope to those who trust Him.

Volunteer Connection Tips

  • Children may relate to "hard things" like moving, losing a pet, or feeling left out. Remind them that God is always with them.
  • Keep the tone calm and reassuring—this story is about courage, not fear.
  • Emphasize that God helps us stand firm when things are hard.

Key Vocabulary

  • Temple: The special building in Jerusalem where people worshiped God.
  • Persevere: To keep trusting God even when it's hard.
  • Faithful: Staying true to God's way even when others don't.

Supply Checklist

  • Bible (open during story)
  • Printed memory verse card (Luke 21:19)
  • Blocks or cups for object lesson
  • Paper, crayons, markers, glue sticks
  • Index cards for bravery activity

Curiosity

OPENING / CURIOSITY (5 minutes)

Welcome Question (displayed):

"What helps you feel brave when things are scary or hard?"

Before Kids Arrive:

  • Write the question on the board or poster.
  • Set out paper and crayons for drawing or writing.
  • Pray quietly: "God, help these children feel Your peace and courage today."

As Kids Arrive (Leader Script): "Hi, [child's name]! What helps you feel brave? Maybe praying, hugging your parents, or remembering a Bible verse?"

At Start Time (Leader Script): "Today Jesus talks about hard things that would happen—but He tells His friends not to be afraid. He promises that when we trust Him, God helps us stand firm."

Curiosity Activity – Shake and Stand

Purpose: To show how God helps us stay strong even when things around us shake.

  1. Build a small "temple" from blocks or cups.
  2. Ask: "What happens if something shakes this?" (Let kids answer.)
  3. Gently shake the table—some blocks fall.
  4. Say: "Jesus said the temple would fall, but God never does. God helps us stand firm!"
  5. Have kids place one hand on their heart and say together, "God helps me stand firm!"

Transition (Leader Script): "Things around us can change or fall apart, but God never does. Let's listen to what Jesus said about standing firm."

Belief

BELIEF (10 minutes)

Leader Instruction: Emphasize courage, not fear. Jesus wanted His friends to know that God is still in control when things are hard.

Prayer of Invitation: "Jesus, thank You that You are with us when things feel hard. Help us listen and trust that You help us stand firm. Amen."

Bible Time Rhyme (with motions):
"Open God's book, let's take a look! God's Word is true, for me and you!"

Storytelling (Luke 21:5–19)

  1. "Jesus' friends admired the temple and said, 'It's so beautiful!'"
  2. "Jesus said, 'The time will come when not one stone will be left on another.'"
  3. "They asked, 'When will this happen?'"
  4. "Jesus said there will be wars, earthquakes, and hard times—but don't be afraid."
  5. "He promised: 'I will give you words to say.'"
  6. "Jesus ended with this promise: 'Stand firm, and you will win life.'"

Engagement Tips:

  • Ask: "What do you think Jesus meant by 'stand firm'?"
  • Have kids stand tall like trees with strong roots.
  • Say: "God helps us stand firm because He is always with us."
