Leader Prep
John points to Jesus with a simple, powerful sentence: Behold, the Lamb of God. Two disciples hear John and start following Jesus. When they ask where He is staying, Jesus answers, "Come and see." Andrew spends time with Jesus and then brings his brother, Simon, who will be called Peter. The pattern of discipleship is clear: see Jesus, stay with Jesus, bring others to Jesus.
Bible Background for Leaders
WHO: John the Baptist; Jesus; two disciples (one is Andrew); Simon Peter.
WHAT: John identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God; Jesus invites, "Come and see"; Andrew brings Peter; Jesus gives Simon a new name (Cephas/Peter).
WHERE: Bethany across the Jordan (John 1:28 context) and nearby where Jesus is staying.
WHY: To reveal who Jesus is and how disciples are called—through witness, invitation, and personal encounter.
KEY TRUTHS: Jesus takes away sin; He invites us close; following Jesus naturally overflows into inviting others.
Volunteer Connection Tips
- Keep the tone invitational: Jesus welcomes questions and time with Him.
- Model short testimonies: a sentence about how Jesus helps you.
- Encourage simple, concrete invitations: "Sit with me," "Come to church," "Pray with me."
Key Vocabulary
- Lamb of God: A title for Jesus that means He is our sacrifice who takes away sin.
- Disciple: A learner and follower of Jesus.
- Invite: To welcome someone to come and see Jesus.
- Bible (open during story)
- Large footprint cutouts or painter's tape footprints on the floor
- Heart poster titled "Come & See"
- Small sheep/lamb cutout or printed image
- Index cards; crayons/markers; tape
Prep Time: 10–15 minutes to place footprints leading to the story area and set the lamb visual.
Leader Prayer:
"Jesus, Lamb of God, thank You for taking away our sin. Help me lead with a warm invitation so kids come and see You today. Amen."
Curiosity
Welcome Question (displayed):
"When has someone invited you to something fun or meaningful?"
Before Kids Arrive:
- Arrange footprint cutouts leading to your teaching space.
- Place the lamb image where kids can see it but do not explain it yet.
- Pray that children will hear Jesus' invitation personally.
"Tell me about an invitation you were excited to receive. Today we will hear Jesus invite people to come and see!"
Curiosity Activity – Follow the Footprints
Purpose: Experience the idea of following Jesus.
- Let kids walk along the footprints to the story area.
- Say: "Following someone means going where they go. What might it look like to follow Jesus?"
"Let's open the Bible to see who Jesus is and how He invites us to follow."
Belief
Prayer of Invitation:
"Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see who You are and our hearts to follow You. Amen."
Bible Time Rhyme (with motions)
"Open God's book, let's take a look!
God's Word is true, for me and you!"
Storytelling (John 1:29–42)
- John the Baptist sees Jesus and says: "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"
- Two disciples hear John and follow Jesus. Jesus asks, "What do you want?" They ask, "Where are You staying?" Jesus replies, "Come and see."
- They spend the day with Jesus. Andrew then finds his brother Simon and says, "We have found the Messiah."
- Andrew brings Simon to Jesus. Jesus looks at him and says he will be called Cephas (Peter).
Object Moments – Lamb & Footprints
- Point to the lamb image: "Jesus is the Lamb of God—He takes away our sin so we can belong to God."
- Stand on the footprints: "Jesus says, 'Come and see.' We follow Him one step at a time—listening, learning, obeying."
Discussion Prompts
- "What do you think Jesus means by 'Come and see'?"
- "Why do you think Andrew brought his brother to Jesus?"
- "What might it look like to bring someone to Jesus today?"
"Our truth today is: Jesus is the Lamb of God who invites us to follow. When we follow Him, we also invite others to come and see."
Teach with motions:
- Hand above eyes like looking ("Look")
- Cradle arms for lamb ("Lamb of God")
- Hands wiping away ("takes away the sin")
- Arms open wide ("of the world")
Faith
Make "follow Jesus" specific: time with Jesus (Bible & prayer), obeying His words, loving people, and inviting friends.
- "What does it look like to follow Jesus today?"
- "Who could you invite to come and see Jesus with you?"
- "When can you spend time with Jesus this week?"
- "What helps you know Jesus better—what questions do you have for Him?"
- "What is one step of obedience you can take this week?"
- "Who could you bring to Jesus—by prayer, invitation, or kindness?"
Interactive Faith Response – Come & See Cards
- Give each child an index card. Write on top: "Come & See."
- Kids write/draw one person they will pray for or invite (use initials if privacy is needed).
- Place cards around the "Come & See" heart poster and pray silently for those friends.
"Following Jesus means we learn from Him and lovingly invite others to meet Him too."
Identity
Craft – Footprint Follower Tag
Supplies: Footprint cutouts or cardstock tags, hole punch, yarn, markers.
- Write: "I follow Jesus" on the footprint. Add John 1:29 reference.
- Decorate with small hearts or arrows.
- Punch a hole and add yarn to wear as a reminder.
"Because we belong to Jesus, we walk in His steps and help others come and see Him."
Closing
"Say it with me: Jesus is the Lamb of God who invites us to follow."
Practice John 1:29 with motions (look, cradle, wipe away, open arms).
Closing Prayer (repeat-after-me)
"Dear Jesus," (pause)
"Thank You for inviting me to come and see." (pause)
"Help me follow You each day." (pause)
"Show me who to invite to know You." (pause)
