Leader Devotional & Invitation

At the Jordan River, Jesus steps into the water to be baptized by John. The heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father's voice declares delight over the Son. This moment reveals who Jesus is and launches His public ministry. As you lead, help children hear God's heart of love in Christ: You are My beloved.

Bible Background for Leaders

WHO: Jesus; John the Baptist; the Holy Spirit; the Father's voice.
WHAT: Jesus is baptized; the Trinity is revealed; the Father affirms the Son.
WHERE: Jordan River region.
WHEN: At the start of Jesus' public ministry.
WHY: To fulfill all righteousness, identify with God's people, and reveal the Son.
KEY TRUTHS: Jesus is the beloved Son; the Spirit anoints; the Father delights; our identity is secure in Christ.

Volunteer Connection Tips

  • Use simple language for baptism: an outside sign of an inside reality—belonging to God and saying yes to His way.
  • Keep tone joyful and affirming. Emphasize God's love and delight in His children.
  • Avoid debates about baptism modes; focus on what this passage reveals about Jesus and identity.

Key Vocabulary

  • Baptism: A sign that we belong to God and are turning to follow Jesus.
  • Holy Spirit: God's presence and power with us.
  • Beloved: Deeply loved and delighted in by God.
Supply Checklist
  • Bible (open during story)
  • Blue cloth or paper to represent the Jordan River
  • Simple dove cutout or small dove image
  • Heart poster titled "God's Delight"
  • Blank cards; crayons/markers; tape

Prep Time: 10–15 minutes to set the "river" cloth and place the dove visual.

Leader Prayer:
"Father, thank You for Your love. Holy Spirit, help me point kids to Jesus, the beloved Son. Amen."

Curiosity

OPENING / CURIOSITY (5 minutes)

Welcome Question (displayed):

"What is something kind or encouraging someone has said to you?"

Before Kids Arrive:

  • Lay the blue cloth ("river") near the front.
  • Place the dove visual where kids will see it during the story.
  • Pray that every child will hear God's love today.
As Kids Arrive (Leader Script):

"Who has said something kind to you lately? How did it make you feel? Today we hear God's kind words to Jesus—and His love for us in Jesus."

Curiosity Activity – Words that Lift

Purpose: Show the power of blessing.

  1. Invite kids to share one kind sentence they could say to a friend.
  2. Write a few on the board: "I'm glad you're here." "You are a good friend."
  3. Say: "If our words can lift someone up, how much more do God's words lift us!"
Transition (Leader Script):

"Let's hear what happened when Jesus was baptized."

Belief

BELIEF (10 minutes)

Prayer of Invitation:
"Lord, open our ears to Your voice and our hearts to Your love. Amen."

Bible Time Rhyme (with motions)

"Open God's book, let's take a look!
God's Word is true, for me and you!"

Storytelling (Matthew 3:13–17)

  1. Jesus comes from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
  2. John hesitates: "I need to be baptized by you," but Jesus says, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness."
  3. As Jesus is baptized, the heavens open and the Spirit of God descends like a dove and rests on Him.
  4. A voice from heaven says: "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

Object Moments – River, Dove, Voice

  1. Point to the blue "river": "Jesus chose obedience."
  2. Hold up the dove: "The Holy Spirit is with Jesus—and with us."
  3. Place a hand near ear: "The Father speaks love and delight."

Discussion Prompts

  • "What did the Father say about Jesus?"
  • "How do you think Jesus felt hearing those words?"
  • "What do God's words tell us about our identity in Jesus?"
Wonder Truth Connection (Leader Script):

"Our truth today is: Jesus is God's beloved Son, and we are loved in Him. In Jesus, God calls us His children and delights in us."

"This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
Matthew 3:17

Teach with motions:

  • Point upward ("This is my Son")
  • Hands over heart ("whom I love")
  • Thumbs-up and smile ("well pleased")

Faith

FAITH (8 minutes)
Leader Instruction:

Help children connect God's delight to daily life. God's love is not earned; it is received in Jesus and shapes our choices.

Younger (K–2):
  • "What do you think God loves about how He made you?"
  • "How can you remember God's love when you are sad or nervous?"
  • "What is one kind choice you can make because God loves you?"
Older (3–5):
  • "What does it mean to live like a loved child of God?"
  • "How does the Spirit help you follow Jesus?"
  • "Where could you speak life-giving words to someone this week?"

Interactive Faith Response – I Am Loved

  1. Give each child a small card. On top, write: "God delights in me."
  2. Children draw or write one way they will follow Jesus this week (tell the truth, help, forgive, pray).
  3. Tape cards around the "God's Delight" heart poster.
Transition (Leader Script):

"Because God loves us in Jesus, we can love others with our words and actions."
