Leader Prep
John 1 soars with the good news that Jesus is the eternal Word who was with God and is God. He is the true Light who shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. In Jesus, God came near and "pitched His tent" among us. Through Him we receive grace upon grace and are invited to become children of God. As you lead, keep the tone full of wonder and welcome: Jesus is God-with-us, full of grace and truth.
Bible Background for Leaders
WHO: Jesus the Word; John the Baptist as witness; all who receive Jesus.
WHAT: Prologue of John: Jesus is the Word and Light; He is rejected by some, received by others; those who receive Him become children of God; the Word becomes flesh, full of grace and truth.
WHERE: Cosmic beginning and the world He made; ministry context in Judea/Galilee follows.
WHY: To reveal Jesus' divine identity and the gift of new life in Him.
KEY TRUTHS: Jesus is God with us; He brings grace and truth; we are invited into God's family by faith.
Volunteer Connection Tips
- Use simple pictures for big truths: light in darkness, a family welcome, a gift labeled "Grace."
- Affirm children's questions. Epiphany means "showing"—Jesus shows us what God is like.
- Repeat short phrases often: "Jesus is the Light," "God came close," "We are God's children in Jesus."
Key Vocabulary
- Word: A title for Jesus meaning He fully reveals who God is.
- Light: God's life and truth that push back darkness.
- Grace: God's free love and help we cannot earn.
- Truth: What is real and faithful in God.
- Bible (open during story)
- Small string lights or a flashlight (the "Light" visual)
- Paper stars (5–10), tape
- Gift box labeled "Grace" (empty or with heart cutouts)
- "Family of God" poster or simple heart poster
- Blank cards and crayons/markers
Prep Time: 10–15 minutes to set up lights, place stars around the room, and prepare the gift box.
Leader Prayer:
"Jesus, true Light, shine in me as I lead. Let Your grace and truth be seen and felt today. Amen."
Curiosity
Welcome Question (displayed):
"Where do you see light in the dark?"
Before Kids Arrive:
- Dim the room slightly if possible; plug in string lights or have flashlight ready.
- Tape paper stars in a few easy-to-find spots.
- Pray: "Jesus, let Your light bring hope here."
"Tell me about a time light helped you—night light, flashlight, sunrise. Today we will hear about the true Light who came into the world!"
Curiosity Activity – Light Hunt
Purpose: Experience light overcoming darkness.
- Turn on the string lights/flashlight and say: "Jesus is the Light!"
- Invite kids to find the paper stars and bring them to the story area.
- Place stars around the open Bible: "God's Word shines with Jesus' light."
"Let's hear what the Bible says about the Word and the Light."
Belief
Prayer of Invitation:
"Lord, open our eyes and hearts to Your Light. Amen."
Bible Time Rhyme (with motions)
"Open God's book, let's take a look!
God's Word is true, for me and you!"
Storytelling (John 1:(1–9) 10–18)
- "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jesus is the Word who made all things.
- He is the true Light who gives light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
- John was sent to point to the Light. He was not the Light; he testified about Jesus.
- Jesus came to His own, but some did not receive Him. Yet all who did receive Him—who believed in His name—He gave the right to become children of God.
- The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, full of grace and truth. From His fullness we receive grace upon grace.
Object Moments – Light & Grace
- Turn on/hold up the light: "Jesus lights our way and pushes back darkness."
- Open the gift box labeled "Grace": give out a heart cutout: "Grace is God's gift—His love and help we cannot earn."
Discussion Prompts
- "What do we learn about Jesus from these verses?"
- "What does it mean that we can become children of God?"
- "Where do you need Jesus' light this week?"
"Our truth today is: Jesus, the true Light, came to live with us. He brings grace and truth—and welcomes us into God's family."
Teach with motions:
- Open hands like a book ("The Word")
- Hug yourself ("became flesh")
- Point down and draw a little house shape ("dwelling among us")
Faith
Help kids name daily ways to walk in Jesus' light—choosing truth, kindness, and prayer when things are hard.
- "Where do you see Jesus' light at home or school?"
- "How can you share His light today?"
- "What would you like to thank Jesus for?"
- "What does it mean to live with grace and truth?"
- "How does being God's child change the way you treat others?"
- "Where do you need courage to choose truth this week?"
Interactive Faith Response – Shine Cards
- Give each child a blank card. Write on top: "Jesus is my Light."
- Kids draw or list one way they will shine this week (help, forgive, tell the truth, pray).
- Invite 2–3 kids to share; place cards around the "Family of God" poster.
"We shine because Jesus shines in us."
Identity
Craft – Grace & Truth Badge
Supplies: Paper circles or badges, safety pins or tape, markers.
- Write: "Grace & Truth" and add John 1:14.
- Decorate with a small star/light symbol.
- Wear as a reminder: "I belong to God's family."
"Because we belong to Jesus, we are God's children—people of grace and truth."
Closing
"Say it with me: Jesus, the true Light, came to live with us."
Practice John 1:14 with motions (book, hug, house).
Closing Prayer (repeat-after-me)
"Dear Jesus," (pause)
"Thank You for coming near." (pause)
"Shine Your light in my heart." (pause)
"Help me live with grace and truth." (pause)
"Amen."
"May the Light of Jesus guide your steps and fill your words with grace this week."
